On August 5, Sergeant Eric Hefner was off duty spending time at the Jehrico Mountain State Park in Berlin, N.H. when he came upon an ATV rolled over on its side and several bystanders signaling for help. Sergeant Hefner ran over to the ATV and assisted the driver who was attempting to climb out the window. He noticed the driver was bleeding from his partially severed hand and was missing two fingers. Sergeant Hefner sat him down while directing a bystander to remove his T-shirt and another to retrieve a stick from the woods.
Utilizing his First Aid training, Hefner tore the T-shirt and applied a tourniquet to the individual’s arm to control the bleeding and prevent further blood loss. As soon as the individual was stabilized, Hefner and other individuals rolled the ATV back on to its wheels to locate the amputated fingers and hand. The extremities were immediately placed in a bag of ice. Sergeant Hefner remained on scene for an hour before medical professionals arrived to give him further treatment. The injured individual was then taken to the nearest airport where he was then taken by helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Sergeant Hefner's quick actions in rendering first aid and applying a tourniquet was crucial to a life-threatening situation.
Sheriff Kevin Coppinger presented Sergeant Hefner with a certificate of recognition for his heroism.
