Hampshire Hosts Baby Goat Day

MSA

The Hampshire County Sheriff's Office hosted a baby goat day, a collaboration of therapy and education for healing and re-entry.

Individuals had the chance to feel the healing power of caring for animals, in this instance 12 baby goats from Thomas Farm in Sunderland. With the help of veterinarian Joe McCoy and Stan McCoy from Sage Meadow Farm in Easthampton, who transported the goats to the facility, goats were running around the courtyard off the visiting room giving the men, and staff alike, the opportunity to nurture an animal, something many people had never experienced.

"Among our most important objectives at the HSO is to provide a therapeutic environment for the men in our care," said Hampshire Sheriff Patrick Cahillane. "In addition to our programming that addresses substance use disorder and mental health issues, and our educational and vocational offerings, we also provide opportunities for the men in our care to further improve themselves by participating in yoga classes, contributing their drawings and writings to our in-house literary magazine, and learning the art of chair caning, to name a few."
